Dominican Republic opens Olympic Qualifier with a victory
UBERLANDIA, Brazil, August 1, 2019 – Dominican Republic defeated
Azerbaijan 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-18) in day one of Pool D of the
FIVB Women’s World Olympic Qualification Tournament.
Bethania de la Cruz scored 13 points, including two blocks and
one ace, as the best Dominican in attack. She was followed by
Prisilla Rivera and Brayelín Martínez each with 12, while
Jineiry Martínez scored 10, with four blocks.
The Dominicans dominated in every aspect of the game – in
attacks (52-47), blocks (7-2) and aces (5-2). Both teams made 21
unforced errors.
In the other match of Pool D, host Brazil beat Cameroon 3-0
(25-14, 25-13, 25-16) in front of a crowded arena.
Gabriela Guimaraes had 15 points as the best scorer for the home
