LIMA, Peru, June 13, 2015 – Defending champions Dominican
Republic opened their campaign at the XIV Women’s Pan American
Cup with a cruising victory over Uruguay in straight-sets 3-0
(25-10, 25-14, 25-8) at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum on Saturday.
The strong serves and effective defense at the net proved to be
the keys for the Dominican victory against the smaller
Uruguayans.
Yonkaira Peña led the balanced Dominican offense with 11 points,
followed by Cindy Rondon and Ana Binet with 7 and 6 points,
respectively. Lisvel Eve, Marianne Fersola, Rosalyn Angeles and
Brayelin Martínez each had five in the victory. Sofía Neves
tallied 7 for Uruguay.
Prisilla Rivera, the captain of Dominican Republic said their
main objective of her team is the qualification the XIV Pan
American Cup offers to the 2016 World Grand Prix.
“We are happy about this first triumph and we hope to continue
getting good results, but no matter the score our goal is to
book a spot in the Grand Prix,” she said.
Coach Marcos Kwiek began congratulating the Uruguayan team for
their performance saying that step by step his team has been
growing and working to get better results at the Pan American
Cup.
“This was an important match to shake off the fear of the
players about big teams like Dominican Republic,” Uruguay’s
captain Sabrina Olave said. “We have not had much time training
but we are working to attain new victories.”
Yamandu Peralta, coach of Uruguay said to be glad about the job
by his team on court. “We are here with a team of very young
girls and with this experience and the one we got in Argentina
we are working for the future and with the sights on the South
American in Colombia where we expect to get better results than
usual.” |
