SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, April 22, 2015 – Hosts
Dominican Republic remained the only undefeated team in the U20
Women’s Pan American Cup following their straight-set (25-19,
25-22, 25-14) victory over Argentina at Ricardo Arias Pavilion
of Santo Domingo on Wednesday.
The big serves of the Dominican, led by Natalia Martinez with 6
aces, proved to be the difference in the last match of day four
of the six-team competition as they outserved their rivals 9-2
in aces.
Martinez led four Dominican players with double figures in the
scores with 14 points. Gaila Gonzalez, Jineiry Martinez and
Maria Garcia each contributed 11 points in the victory.
Maria Corbalan and Anahi Tosi finished with 14 and 12 points,
respectively, for the defeated side.
“I think both teams had a good performance,” said Yocaty Perez,
the Dominican Captain. “We were a little bit pressed playing in
front of a big crowd but at the end we were able to get the
win.”
“We had many unforced errors with our serves,” said Azul
Benitez, the captain of Argentina. @But we couldn’t control them
with our blocking.”
“The girls felt the pressure of playing at home in front of
their fans and our game level was down,” said Wagner Pacheco,
the coach of Dominican Republic. “They were able of neutralize
our opposite (Gaila Gonzalez), but our outside hitters did a
good job and Argentina failed with their serves.”
“Dominican Republic was a deserving winner,” said Mauro
Silvestre, the coach of Argentina. “They dominated the match and
we tried our best. Matches like this one help to the growth of
our team. That’s what we are here for. Now we have to prepare
for the match against Chile, and that’s a tough one too.” |
