Dominican Republic remains undefeated in Pool B

 

   

LIMA, Peru, June 15, 2015 – Defending champions Dominican Republic overcame Cuba 3-1 (25-27, 25-14, 25-22, 25-21) on Monday to remain undefeated after three outings in Pool B of the XIV Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum of Lima.

 

After a very close first set, the Dominican team dictated the pace and was in control benefitting from the huge number of errors made by the Cuban side (38 to 19). The winners held a slight margin in blocks (11-10) while Cuba dominated in services winners 8-2.

 

Yonkaira Peña and Lisvel Eve had 14 and 13 points, respectively, to lead the scoring for the Dominican Republic. Veteran Cindy Rondon added 12, including a tournament-high 8 blocks, Marianne Fersola charted 11 and newcomer Erasma Moreno chipped in with 9 points.

 

Cuba’s Melissa Vargas had a match-high 19 points, including three aces. Alena Rojas had 14 in the losing cause while Sulian Matienzo and Yanet Alvarez each had 11.

 

Prisilla Rivera, captain of Dominican Republic highlighted on the importance of the new victory on their way to booking a ticket to the Grand Prix. “Now we have to think about tomorrow’s match and recover from the mistakes we committed today.”

 

Marcos Kwiek, coach of Dominican Republic: “In today’s match we saw two good teams who know each other very well and that’s why is so important to take advantage of the opponents’ errors. Every game is tough and we have to keep working and achieve our goal of reaching the Grand Prix.”

 

Sulian Matienzo, captain of Cuba: “Our team started very strong but then we began to make errors they took advantage of and were able to get the win. I know we could have done better but you have to turn the page and play better tomorrow.”

 

Roberto Garcia, coach of Cuba, commented that in the first set his team was in calm but in the second their rivals adjusted their game and the Cuban blocking was not able to be ready on time. We made too many errors in the second set that we repeated in the last two sets and was very difficult to recover. Now we have to work to reduce those errors.”
