Dominican Republic undefeated in three outings
MEXICO CITY, Mexico, June 13, 2014 – Dominican Republic claimed
its third victory in a row in Pool A after defeating a brave
Mexico in straight sets 25-23, 25-20, 25-22 in the third day of
actions at the XIII Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup on
Friday.
The Mexicans battled point by point but at the end succumbed
against a superior team of Dominican Republic.
Yonkaira Peña was the main offensive arm for the winners with 18
points followed by Brayelin Martinez and Bethania De la Cruz
with 9 and 8, respectively. Mexico’s Andrea Rangel had a
match-high 19 points in the losing effort.
The Dominicans held a 9-6 advantage in the blocking department
led by Candida Arias who finished with four blocks.
“It was a good game for Mexico and not as good for us,”
Dominican De la Cruz explained. “We felt the pressure and were
not too motivated. Also their floating serves at this altitude
caused us some problems. But at the end we got the win 3-0.”
“Mexico is a young team and like Cuba they don’t play us feeling
any kind of pressure,” Coach Marcos Kwiek stated. “They served
well and we lacked a bit of discipline.”
Jorge Azair, Coach of Mexico: “I am pleased with the job the
girls did against a team like the Dominican Republic, one of the
best in the world. They are now starting to believe in
themselves, which is important as confidence builder.” |
