Dominican Republic will play for fifth place

DURANGO, Mexico, August 22, 2021.- Dominican Republic will play for the fifth place of the Men’s NORCECA Continental Championship after defeating Trinidad and Tobago in straight sets 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-20) in Durango, Mexico.

Dominicans wait for the winner between United States and Guatemala for the fifth place match; Trinidad and Tobago plays for seventh place against the loser.

Domincan Republic had no setback making several changes during their performance, with 42-33 margin in attacks and 4-2 in serves, while both teams scored 5 points on blocks. Dominican Republic committed 21 errors and Trinidad and Tobago a total of 24.

Opposite Henry Tapia once again led Dominican Republic scoring 13 points on 11 kills and 2 aces, outside hitters Henry López (only playing the first two sets) and Hector Alexis Cruz tallied 11 points each.

Outside hitter Daynte Stewart of Trinidad and Tobago led all scorers with a match-high of 24 points on 20 attacks, 2 blocks and 2 aces.

Henry Tapia, Captain of Dominican Republic: “We were more relaxed today, it was an easy game. We will play for fifth place, which wasn’t our goal but we hope in the next opportunity to finish among the top three places. Trinidad and Tobago was not much of a challenge for us today”.

Dante Mañon, Coach of Dominican Republic: “I had the opportunity to use bench players because this wasn’t too much of challenge. Trinidad and Tobago plays with a high ball and we on the sides, and that’s not hard for us to control”.

Gideon Dixon, Coach of Trinidad and Tobago: “I feel we could have measured the opposing team but because we don’t play at this level often we ran out of endurance at the end of the game. More competition at this level will help us improve. Hopefully next time it will be different; we have improved with each performance, we won in small things, we need to win bigger”.
