AGUASCALIENTES, Mexico, August 11, 2021.-
Defending champion Dominican Republic swept
Trinidad and Tobago 3-0 (25-8, 25-5, 25-5) in
the inaugural match of the U23 Women’s Pan
American Cup, qualifier to the first edition of
the Cali 2021 Junior Pan American Games.
Dominican Republic had no difficulties in
dominating Trinidad and Tobago in pool A, with a
huge 32-5 margin in attacks and 12-0 in serves,
while scoring on 30 opponent errors. Trinidad
and Tobago led in blocks by 3-1 and benefited
from 10 Dominican errors.
Dominican Outside hitter Madeline Guillen led
all scorers with 15 points, 9 on kills and 6
aces; outside hitter Jailene Caraballo
contributed with 8 points, including 4 aces and
middle blocker Sthefany González added 7 points.
Middle blocker Natassia Baptiste led Trinidad
and Tobago scorers with 5 points.
On day two of pool A, Trinidad and Tobago (0-1)
will face Suriname and Dominican Republic (1-0)
has the day off.

“I felt it was a good match, we have been
preparing well and we have almost two years
without playing. We were confident, it felt good
and we reached today’s goal”.
Cristian Cruz Assistant Coach of Dominican
Republic: “We started with a weak counterattack
because they don’t dominate the attack as well,
but we improved as the matched developed. We
came without knowing our opponents but I believe
we have what it takes to win, we came to do that
giving our best with good preparation”.
Rayquelle Dickson Captain of Trinidad and
Tobago: “We were a little nervous, my team can
showcase better. As we build on our moments we
improved and that will also happen with each
upcoming performance”.
Mae Courtnee Coach of Trinidad and Tobago: “the
girls were really nervous being the first match
and we know that Dominican Republic is a very
good team. I was hoping for a stronger showing
of the game; there were glimpses of some good
moments that I was pleased with and that we can
take for our next game”. |
