SENDAI, Japan, August 31, 2015 – Dominican
Republic recovered from their straight set drawback from Serbia
on Sunday, and came up with 3-1 (25-18, 25-19, 22-25, 25-17)
victory over Peru on
Monday in the second round of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World
Cup at the Sendai Gymnasium.
Peru’s Katherine Regalado topped all scorers with 18 points, and
team-mate Katherinne Olemar added 11 points, but it was Yonkaira
Paola Pena Isabel and Gina Altagracia Mambru Garcia’s point
contributions that mattered in the victory for the Dominican
Republic. Pena and Mambru scored 17 and 16 points, respectively.
In Okayama, reigning world champions the United States beat
Argentina in straight sets here Monday afternoon for their sixth
win in seven matches.
Kimberly Hill and Karsta Lowe scored 13 points apiece to lead
four American players in double digits in the 25-16, 25-19 and
25-14 victory. Foluke Akinradewo received the Most Impressive
Player award with nine kills and two blocks.
Josefina Fernandez had 11 points to lead the scoring of
Argentina, who slipped to a 3-4 win-loss record.
Also in Okayama, four-time World Cup title winners Cuba beat
Algeria in straight sets to snap their five-game losing streak.
The Cuban women, who had won the World Cup four times in a row
from 1989 to 1999, swept Algeria 25-17, 25-16 and 25-14 for
their second victory in seven tries while the African runners-up
have lost all seven matches so far at this 12-team round robin
tournament.
Sulian Matienzo received the Most Impressive Player award after
notching up 13 kills, three blocks and two aces to lead Cuba
with 18 points with Heidy Rodriguez coming from the bench to add
10.Nawel Hammouche led Algeria with nine points.
