Dominican Team used its experience against Cuba 

 

TRUJILLO, Peru, July 6, 2019 - The Dominican Republic relied on its experience and edged Cuba by 3-2 (23-25, 19-25, 29-27, 25-18, 15-12) for its first victory in Pool A of the Senior Women's Pan American Cup, which takes place at the Gran Chimú Coliseum in Trujillo.

 

The young Cuban team started the game with an aggressive attack by the ends, but the Dominicans entered into rhythm of game and with greater concentration in their plays they got their first 3 points in the Pan American match.

 

Gaila González, Yonkaira Peña, Lisvel Eve and Prisilla Rivera were the top scorers with 22, 16, 12 and 10 points respectively. Despite the defeat Cuba, had the highest scorer of the game, Greisy Fine who recorded 27 units, followed by Diaris Pérez with 19, Claudia Hernandez 12 and Jessica Aguilera 11.

 

Both teams registered 55 attack points each. Cuba proved superior in blocking (16-19) and service (5-9), but the Dominican reduced its unforced errors to 24, compared to 35 of the losing team.

 

Dominican coach, Marcos Kwiek: It was not the way we wanted to start the tournament, but I want to give rotation to the team and let other players rest. Today we started very slow, they were very aggressive instead; Then when we had the most balanced receipt we were able to overcome the game, it was a very intense game, very difficult.

 

Coach of Cuba, Leivis García: Dominican team showed today a very level game, they knew how to get out from behind. Despite the result, I am happy for the girls, they were very disciplined in the tactical point of view; but they are young team and lacked a bit more determination, however it was a good match.

 

Dominican Republic will open the day of this Sunday, July 7, playing at 4:00 p.m. against Guatemala. Then, Cuba will face Canada at 6:00 p.m.
