SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, April 16, 2015 – The third
edition of the U20 Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup is set to
serve off on Sunday with three matches at Ricardo Arias Pavilion
in the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center of Santo Domingo.
The members of the Dominican Republic team were introduced to
the media during a press conference held at premises of the
FIVB/NORCECA Regional Development Center in Dominican Republic.
The Dominicans will be vying for their first gold medal in the
competition after finishing in second place in the two previous
events held in Lima, Peru (2011) and Havana, Cuba (2013). The
six-team tournament also includes teams hailing from Argentina,
Chile, Costa Rica, Mexico and Nicaragua.
In 2013 at the Coliseum of Ciudad Deportiva in Havana, Mexico
won the title’s contest with a 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 14-25, 25-15)
victory over Dominican Republic. Two years earlier in 2011 at
Miguel Grau Coliseum in Lima, Peru won the gold medal by
defeating the Dominicans also by 3-1 (18-25, 29-27, 25-20,
25-17).
The Chileans arrived early and have been training and playing
scrimmage matches for about a week against different Dominican
teams.
The tournament will be played under a round-robin format with
the top two teams at the end of the phase playing for the gold
medal and the next two for the bronze.
The daily action kicks off at 3:00 pm with the next two matches
scheduled at 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm.
The matches of Sunday are: Chile vs Costa Rica, Argentina vs
Mexico and Dominican Republic vs Nicaragua. |
