Dominicans advance to semis at Pan Am Cup

LIMA, Peru, June 16, 2015 - Dominican Republic secured a direct ticket to the semifinals of the XIV Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup by defeating Canada in straight sets 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 26-24) at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum of Lima on Tuesday.

The triumph also earned the Dominicans a ticket to next year’s FIVB World Grand Prix. The Caribbean side improved to 4-0 win-loss record in Pool B while the North Americans fell to 3-1.

Yonkaira Peña and Brayelin Martinez finished with 14 and 13 points, respectively, as the best scorers for the Dominican Republic. Tabitha Love and Lucille Charuk led Canada with 13 and 10 points with Charuk registering a match-high 7 blocks.

The Canadians committed 29 unforced errors to 14 by the winners. Both teams finished with 5 aces with 3 by Peña.

Prisilla Rivera, captain of Dominican Republic, began her statement celebrating the fact that the victory over Canada gives her team the qualification to the Grand Prix and first place in Pool B.

“It is always difficult for us to play against Canada, but we are happy since we achieved our first goal which was the qualification and now we go after the other which is making to the finals.”

“As my captain said it is motive to celebrate advancing to the Grand Prix but there is a lot of tournament ahead of us and it is getting tough as we move on. Despite being undefeated there are many things to adjust,” said Marcos Kwiek, coach of Dominican Republic.

Brittney Page, captain of Canada said to feel a little disappointed for the loss despite the big effort. “It was a tough match against the Dominicans but I feel that in the second set we could have done more to win it. In the third set the difference was minimal and could have gone either way.”

Arnd Ludwig, coach of Canada said his team “was a little bit hesitant in the first set with the serves because we planned to press that way. We started to do that in the third set and had them struggling but at the end we made too many errors. We also have to give credit to No 16 Peña who closed the match with her run of services.”
