Juncos, Puerto Rico, September 16, 2015 – The Dominican Republic
team is on the cusp of advancing to the medal round phase at the
FIVB Volleyball Women’s U20 World Championship following their
straight-set 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-18) victory over Bulgaria on
Wednesday.
The Dominicans, the only undefeated team in the tournament with
a 5-0 win-loss mark, only need to win one set against Peru in
their Thursday’s contest to secure a ticket in the final-four
round of the 16-team age-group event.
Even in the case of the loss, by winning one set the Dominicans
would secure a better set-ratio than Peru and Japan, the other
two contenders in Pool F. They have a 2-0 record with 6 points
and a 6-0 record in sets won and lost.
Brayelin Martínez and Gaila González each notched 17 points in
the victory over Bulgaria while Miroslava Paskova had 12 points
for the losers.
In the consolation round for the 9-16 positions:
China blanked Puerto Rico 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-14) with Ye Jin
and Qingqing Du leading the win with 17 and 14 points,
respectively. Karla Santos had 14 in the losing effort.
Cuba edged Mexico 3-2 (20-25, 25-23, 26-24, 27-29, 15-10) behind
27 points by Diaris Perez and the support of Claudia Hernandez
who added 15 tallies. Mexico’s María Rodriguez and Fernanda
Bañuelos finished with 22 and 16 points, respectively, in the
loss. |
