MAUNABO, Puerto Rico, September 13, 2015 – Dominican Republic
defeated a battling Brazil team 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-19) to
capture the top place in Pool D at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s
U20 World Championship.
The Dominican spikes and blocks were the keys for them to climb
to the top of the pool and bring down their Latin American
rivals.
Dominican captain Brayelin Martinez nailed 22 points while Gaila
Gonzalez and Natalia Martinez contributed 16 and 10 in the
victory. Lorenne Geraldo was the most prolific scorer for Brazil
with 14 points.
The Dominicans now will play a round-robin in Pool E at Juncos
against teams of Japan, Peru and Bulgaria. Teams in Pool F at
Gurabo are Russia, Italy, Serbia and Brazil. The top two teams
from each pool advance to the semifinals.
In Gurabo,
Cuba held off hosts Puerto Rico to claim a five-set 3-2 (25-14,
25-20, 20-25, 11-25, 15-7) victory in a contest between winless
teams of Pool A.
Liset Herrera led three Cuban
players with double figures in the scores with 13 points,
followed by Claudia Hernandez and Kitania Medina each with 10
points. Karla Santos had a match-high 17 points for Puerto Rico
while Paola Rivera finished with ten in the loss.
In Juncos, Peru won 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-23) over an improved
Mexico. Maguilaura Frias led the scores for the Peruvian team
with 14 points while Maria Fernanda Rodriguez nailed 12 points
for losing side of Mexico.
Cuba and Mexico will play in Pool G at Maunabo with Chinese
Taipei and Czech Republic in the round robin for the 9-16
positions. Puerto Rico will play in Pool H at Caguas with China,
Egypt and Turkey. |
