Dominicans conclude U18 preliminary phase with 6-0 mark
ORLANDO, Florida, June 25, 2016 – The Dominican Republic
finished with an undefeated 6-0 record in the preliminary round
of the U18 International Division at the AAU Girls’ National
Volleyball Championships taking place at the Orange County
Convention Center of Orlando.
The Dominicans completed their spotless journey through the
first round with 2-0 victories over Puerto Rico and Colombia on
Saturday. In a morning match they defeated Puerto Rico 25-12,
25-19 and outplayed Colombia 25-17, 25-18 in a noon match.
According the competition regulation, the Dominican Republic
will play the second placed Brazil (4-2) for the gold medal of
the U18 International Division on Sunday.
The Brazilians improved to 4-1 with a 2-0 (25-16, 25-20) win
over Slovenia before succumbing 2-1 (25-18, 18-25, 16-14) in a
battle with China. In the preliminary contest between the two
finalists, the Dominican Republic prevailed 2-0 (25-19, 25-16).
“It will be a tough match considering the tradition of a
powerhouse like Brazil but our girls are optimistic and with
high spirits after winning the preliminary round without giving
up a single set,” said assistant coach Cristian Cruz.
More than 23,000 players divided in 2,300 teams and 22 divisions
are taking part in the 43rd AAU Girls’ Junior National
Volleyball Championships. A total of 159 courts have been set up
for the huge event. |
