TIJUANA, Mexico, January 4 2015 - The National Volleyball Team
of Dominican Republic departed to Nebraska to compete at the
Norceca Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament that begins
Thursday, January 7 at Pinnacle Bank Arena at the City of
Lincoln.
The team coached by Marcos Kwiek held a one week training camp
at the Baja California High Performance Center, that helped them
to adjust and prepare for the Olympic Qualifier by holding some
scrimmage matches against Colombia, who also departed to South
America for their Continental qualification tournament.
“Baja California has been like a second home for us, this was a
great training and we expect to have a great tournament”, said
Kwiek, who looks forward to qualify with his team to the
Olympics, that will be celebrated in his native country.
Since the FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship in 2007, the High
Performance Center has been like a second home to the Dominican
team. Many of its players that today are part of the most
important ones in the Senior Team, played their first big level
matches here more than eight years ago.
Baja California has given good luck to a lot of the players that
are part of this generation in the Caribbean team, after winning
two medals at the 2009 and 2013 Women’s U20 and U23 World
Championships, when the Dominicans finished with the silver.
They have also won some Tournaments like the Pan American Cup in
2008 as well as several international friendship championships
celebrated in the region.
One of the greatest moments for Dominican Volleyball was in
2012, when during the spring that year, the pupils of Kwiek
claimed their ticket to the London 2012 Olympic Games, after
defeating Cuba at the NORCECA Qualification Tournament that was
celebrated in Tijuana. |
