SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, July 13, 2021
– Dominican Republic joined Mexico as men’s
volleyball teams qualified to the Junior Pan
American Games in Cali, Colombia after a
straight-set victory 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-20)
over Guatemala on Tuesday.
The Mexicans won the first match of the day with
an overwhelming victory in consecutive sets over
Suriname.
Dawilin Mendez scored 11 points as the top
Dominican attacker followed by Edouarde Fuhit
and Luis Reinoso each with 10 points. Bryan
Turbides chipped in with 9 points.
Guatemala’s Jason Hernandez finished with 12
points as the best scorer in the match.
Francisco Gamboa and Jose Carrillo added 10 and
9, respectively.
Jose Gutierrez, coach of Dominican Republic:
“It was an interesting match. We had the
priority of qualifying to the Pan American Games
in Cali.Today our boys were loaded because we
had a weight lifting program besides the regular
training. That’s in preparation for the
semifinals matches and maybe a final.”
Raider Lucas, coach of Guatemala:
“I want to congratulate the Dominican team.
Today they looked very mature in the court. They
have a lot more training than us. They are
athletes with experience with many facilities
within the sport.”
Luis Reinoso, captain of Dominican Republic:
“It was a very good match. We were a little
bit over confident and Guatemala took advantage
of it to score more points. But it was really a
great match.”
Jason Hernández, captain of Guatemala:
“It was a close match and we feel satisfied
about our performance playing at this level.” |
