SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, April 21, 2015 – The
Dominican Republic subdued Chile in straight sets (25-18, 25-16,
25-9) to extend their winning streak to three victories in as
many outings at the U20 Women’s Pan American Cup being contested
at Ricardo Arias Pavilion of Santo Domingo.
The Dominicans relied on their potent attacks by outscoring the
opposition 34-19 while dominating the blocking category 9-5.
Chile dropped their win-loss record to 1-2.
Natalia Martinez led the Dominican team with 20points, with 3
blocks and two aces included, and Gaila Gonzalez contributed 13
points. Catalina Melo led Chile with nine points, including two
aces.
“We made the adjustments following the instructions of our coach
after the close first set,” said Yocaty Perez, the Dominican
captain. “They (Chile) played bravely especially in the first
set.”
“We played good defense with our reception and blocking against
a team with a lot of power and volume of play. We are not
satisfied because you always want more,” Melo said.
“The first set was pretty even but in the second and third sets
we got the balance and reduced the errors with our serves,” said
Wagner Pacheco, the coach of Dominican Republic. “The strength
was the difference and technically we are higher than Chile
also.”
“It was a good job by the Dominican Republic for the whole
match,” Chilean coach Hugo Jauregui said. “The difference was
the strength more than the size. Our reception and defense kept
us in the game for moments but we couldn’t match their power.” |
