GURABO, Puerto Rico, September 12, 2015 – The Dominican Republic
became one of the seven teams already qualified to the top-eight
round at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s U20 World Championship
following their 3-1 (25-20, 24-26, 25-19, 25-14) victory over
Czech Republic on Saturday.
The Dominicans now have a 2-0 win-loss record joining Russia,
Bulgaria, Peru, Japan, Italy and Brazil as the sides with
secured tickets to the next phase of the 16-team event.
Brayelin Martinez and Gaila Gonzalez were the main offensive
leaders for the Dominican team with 19 and 17 points,
respectively, while Jineiry Martinez added 13 in the victory.
Anna Sucha finished with 10 for the defeated side.
The Dominicans outblocked their opponents 13-5 but the Turkish
were better from the service line 9-3.
In Maunabo, Bulgaria overcame Cuba 3-1 (25-19, 24-26, 25-19,
25-16) with 18 points from Miroslava Paskova. Kitania Medina had
16 for Cuba.
In Juncos, Russia defeated a high-spirited Puerto Rico 3-0
(25-14, 25-17, 25-21).
Tatiana Iurinskaia led three Russians with double figures in the
scores with 16 points followed by Angelina Sperskaite and Anna
Lazareva with 12 points apiece. Karla Santos was the best Puerto
Rican with 17 points.
Dominican Republic plays Brazil on Sunday for first place in
Pool D while Puerto Rico will be pitted against Cuba for third
place in Pool A. |
