Dominicans seek their fourth gold in a row at CACG
CORDOBA, México, November 10, 2014 – The Dominican Republic
women’s team will be seeking for their fourth straight
volleyball gold medal at the XXII Central American and Caribbean
Games of Veracruz 2014.
The Dominican team, sixth in the FIVB world rankings with a
fifth place at the FIVB Women’s World Championship of Italy
2014, are the top favorite to once again win the title of the
competition whose opening matches are scheduled to kick off on
Saturday at the Cordoba Arena.
The team coached by Marcos Kwiek will be out to defend the crown
they conquered in 2010 at the Games of Mayagüez after defeating
hosts Puerto Rico for the gold medal.
Since 2002, the Dominicans have won the first place at the
regional competition for a total of five gold medals, adding to
their first two titles in 1946 and 1962.
The Dominicans’ historical record also includes a silver medal
in 1998 and four bronzes in 1966, 1974, 1978 and 1982, for a
total of 10 podiums.
In the women’s tournament Cuba is the most successful team, with
a total of 8 gold medals including seven crowns in a row between
1974 and 1998. The Cubans also have finished twice in second
place, for a total of 10 medals at Central American and
Caribbean Games.
The only other team awarded with gold medals in their historical
record at regional competition are Mexico, with three (1938,
1959, 1970), as well as seven silver medals (1966, and from 1974
through 1993), and also three bronze medals (en 1946, 1962 y
2002) for a total of 13 podiums.
