Dominicans to defend crown at NORCECA U20
AGUASCALIENTES, Mexico, June 15, 2018 – The U20 NORCECA Women’s
Continental Championship from June 18-23 will take place in
Aguascalientes, Mexico with the participation of eight teams.
The teams announced to be battling for one ticket to next year’s
FIVB World Championship of the age-group are Guatemala, Cuba,
Puerto Rico and United States in Pool A, and Dominican Republic,
Costa Rica, Mexico and Honduras in Pool B.
The Aguascalientes State Sport Gymnasium will be the official
competition venue. Teams will arrive in Aguascalientes on June
16 while the members of the Control Committee will arrive one
day earlier.
The Dominican Republic is the defending champion having won the
previous U20 event held in Fort Lauderdale, United States in
2016. Then the Dominicans defeated United States 3-1 in the
decisive match to claim the gold medal.
The teams representing USA have won the competition a record six
times but the Dominican Republic’s teams have triumphed in two
of the last three editions.
The competition format establishes that the winners of pools
advance directly to the semifinal phase with the teams in second
and third places will meet in crossed matches in the
quarterfinals. The medal matches will take place on June 23.
