JUNCOS, Puerto Rico, September 17, 2015 – The Dominican Republic
swept Peru 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 28-26) to move to the semifinal
round at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s U20 World Championship on
Thursday.
Brayelin Martinez recorded a team-high 27 points to lead the
victory, while pulling away as the top scorer of the tournament
with 118 points, eighteen more than Brazilian Lorenne Geraldo
with two more matches to play.
Natalia Martinez contributed 13 points in the victory while
Gaila Gonzalez and Jineiry Martinez chipped in with 11 apiece.
The Dominicans, with a 6-0 win-loss record for the competition
and 18-1 in sets played, take on Italy in one of the semifinals
in Maunabo. The other semifinal will see Brazil playing Japan in
Gurabo.
Italy outblocked Russia 13-5 en route to a convincing 3-0
(25-18, 26-24, 25-15) victory with Paola Egonu leading the
scorers with 14 points.
Brazil defeated a resilient Serbia 3-1 (25-14, 27-25, 27-29,
25-20) with the duo of Lorenne Geraldo and Drussyla Costa each
finishing with 16 points.
Japan beat Bulgaria 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 28-26) and had to wait
until the outcome of the match between Dominican Republic and
Peru to celebrate the pass to the semifinals. Nanami Hirose led
Japan with 18 points.
Meanwhile, playing for lower positions, Chinese Taipei overcame
Cuba 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25- 16), Czech Republic delivered a loss
to Mexico 3-1 (25-18, 17-25, 25-20, 25-15) and Puerto Rico
greatly enjoyed their first win at home soil, over Egypt 3-2
(25- 16, 25-10, 18-25, 23-25, 18-16). |
