Dominicans win Pool B with thrilling comeback

LIMA, Peru, June 17, 2015 – Dominican Republic made a sensational comeback to defeat Brazil in five sets 3-2 (16-25, 18-25, 25-17, 25-18, 15-10) to claim first place in Pool B of the XIV Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum of Lima on Wednesday.

Yonkaira Peña led the victory with 26 points, including three blocks and three aces, while Gina Mambru, who has been used sporadically as she recovers from some ailments, came off the bench to score 16 crucial points, all in attacks.

Lorenne Geraldo was the best Brazilian with 23 points, all via spikes, while Drussyla Costa added 14 in the losing effort.

Both teams had 8 blocks in the match and the Dominicans held the advantage in attacks 55-53 and service winners 5-2.

Peña commented after the match: “We knew for sure that it was not going to be easy. Our coach had to rotate players because we are very tired but we all are here to contribute. At the beginning the team was out of focus but then we reacted and improved our defense and the blocking.”

Marcos Kwiek, the coach of Dominican Republic: “We started serving very bad and they managed the game well with the ball in their hands. I had to make changes and adjustments using what I have available and with new players off the bench the game calmed down for us. Now we have to continue with the recovery of our players.”

Lana Conceicao, captain of Brazil: “The result shows how strong is our team as we continue preparing for the competition at the world championship. I am glad to see the confidence we are gaining as we play close matches against Olympic teams like Dominican Republic.”

Mauricio Thomas, coach of Brazil: “It was a decisive match for us to qualify among the top teams. We built a very interesting match and were two sets ahead of a team that is a favorite. We faced experienced players but in the fourth set we lost many serves. The experience of the other team prevailed. I am proud of the road my team is breaking in its preparation for the world championship.”
