LIMA, Peru, May 9, 2015 – The Dominican Republic won a
sensational duel with hosts Peru to advance to an encounter with
undefeated Argentina for the gold medal at the Final Four U18
Volleyball Girls’ Gatorade Cup on Sunday.
Massiel Matos scored a tournament-high 32 points to lead the
Dominican Republic to a nail-biting 3-2 (25-22, 23-25, 21-25,
25-21, 17-15) victory over Peru at Niño Heroe Manuel Bonilla
Coliseum on Saturday night.
Vielka Peralta contributed 13 points in the victory while Leslie
Leyva led Peru with 20 points followed by Katherine Regalado and
Nicole Abreu with 13 apiece.
“Peru is a very strong rival but today we had too many errors,”
Dominican Republic’s captain Yocaty Perez said. “We need to
improve a lot of things to try to avenge the loss to Argentina
in day one.”
“At the end we committed more mistakes than them and that’s why
we couldn’t claim the win,” Peruvian Nicole Abreu said. |
