SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, July 16, 2021
– Host Dominican Republic earned the bronze
medal at the U23 Men’s Pan American Cup with a
3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-22) victory over
Guatemala on Friday.
Dominican Edouard Fuhit fired 21 points,
including four aces, as the star player of the
match. Joelvi Jimenez and Bryan Turbides
contributed 10 points in the victory, while Luis
Reinoso and Dawilin Mendez added 8 apiece.
Jose Carrillo led Guatemala with 14 points,
followed by Jose Pablo Pérez and Francisco
Gamboa each with 13 points.
Luis Reinoso, captain of Dominican Republic:
“The match had many ups and downs. Our team
faced problems with the serves, but then we
caught rhythm and things came out the way it
should and got the victory.”
Jason Hernandez, captain of Guatemala: “It was
close match since the whistle and after winning
the first set we couldn’t keep the calm and the
Dominicans came back.”
Jose Gutierrez, coach of Dominican Republic:
“Congratulations to Guatemala for the ticket to
the Cali Games. Very glad with the result
because after one year and three months with the
pandemic, a third place medal with only one
month of training is good.”
Raidel Lucas, coach of Guatemala: “The match
meant a lot since the third place was in play.
Even though we won the first set, we lacked
stability and it was reflected in the outcome.”
