Dutch St. Maarten relegates St. Vincent to the cellar of ECVA
ST JOHNS, Antigua, December 7, 2014 - The battle at the bottom
was won by Dutch St. Maarten 3-1 (25-16, 27-25, 23-25 and 25 -19
) over St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the opening match of
the final day of competition in the ECVA Senior Men
Championship.
Middle Blockers in Stephan Ellis (12 points) and Derrick
Tidort (10 points) led the scorers for Dutch St Marteen. The
brunt of the St. Vincent attack was borne by Captain Cassius
Franklyn and Brendon Smart both with 15 points.
“We are not satisfied with the position where we ended but
certainly satisfied with tonight’s performance. I thought that
the guys stuck to the game plan by shutting down their main
attack and thus forced them into uncharacteristic play that
caused some errors and allowed us to execute” said Raymond
Jacobs of St. Maarten.
Coach Brian Burke of St. Vincent though not happy was hopeful.
“This tournament has shown us that we need to do a lot more work
on the fundamentals of the game and get a lot more exposure to
competition. We have noted some positives - we can play well at
times but this is not consistent or sustained for any length of
time. So we have seen the areas where we have work to do”, he
reported. |
