Nine teams to battle for ticket to Japan and NORCECA supremacy

 

OMAHA, Nebraska, September 12, 2013- Nine NORCECA women’s teams are ready to battle for one spot in the FIVB Grand Champions Cup to be played in Nagoya and Tokyo, Japan later this year, when the 2013 Continental Championship gets underway at the Ralston Arena from September 16 to 21.

 

Hosts defending champions United States, currently ranked No. 2 in the world, will face No. 15 Cuba and No. 25 Mexico in Pool B during the preliminary round.

 

World No. 8 Dominican Republic will compete in Pool A against Central American champions Costa Rica (26) and CAZOVA champions Trinidad & Tobago (33).

 

The Pool C consists of Puerto Rico (20), Canada (23) and non-ranked and debutants St Lucia, champions of the Eastern Caribbean zone (ECVA).

 

Three daily matches will take place at the Ralston Arena, a multi-sport facility inaugurated last year, in the suburbs of Omaha with a seating capacity of around 5,000 spectators.

 

The two pool winners with best records (win-lost, points, points-ratio) will get byes to the semifinals (September 20) while the other pool winner will play in the quarterfinals phase with the three second placed teams (September 19).

 

The bronze-and gold-medal matches close the competition on September 21 with the winner of the tournament earning the trip to the season-ending FIVB Women’s Grand Champions Cup this November in Japan.

 

Defending champions USA have won six gold medals in the history of the biennial event, including four of the last six. Cuba leads the list of title winners with 13 while Mexico with two and Dominican Republic with one are the only two other countries crowned in the tournament.
