Eight teams to participated in second U23 Pan Am Cup

 

ICA, Peru, September 2, 2014 – The second edition of the U23 Women’s Pan American Cup will be played in the cities of Ica and Chincha, Peru from September 7 to 13 with the participation of eight teams representing NORCECA and South American Confederations.

 

The event is organized by the Pan American Volleyball Union presided over by Cristóbal Marte Hoffiz in conjunction with the Peruvian Volleyball Federation, presided over by Dr. Luis Linares, and grants three tickets –two to NORCECA and one to South America- to the FIVB U23 World Championship in 2015.

 

The teams are divided into two pools of four with the top ranked teams of each pool at the end of the preliminary pool-play advancing directly to the semifinal round to take place in Ica. The teams placed second and third will play crossed matches in the quarterfinals.

 

The matches for the medals will take place in Ica on September 13 with teams, officials and referees departing on September 14.

 

The participating teams for the second edition are the following: Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Peru and Trinidad & Tobago.

 

Matches in Chincha will be contested at Teodoro “Lolo” Fernández Coliseum while the Jose Oliva Razzeto Coliseum will host the competition in Ica.

 

The members of the Control Committee, consisting of members of both volleyball confederations, will arrive in Peru on September 4, one day before of the arrival of the teams.

 

The first edition of the U23 Pan American Cup also took place in Peru in September of 2012 with the Dominican Republic claiming the gold medal at the inaugural event at Miguel Grau Coliseum of Callao. Brazil finished second while Argentina took home the bronze medal.

 

Final Ranking was as follows: 1. Dominican Republic, 2. Brazil, 3. Argentina, 4. Peru, 5. Cuba, 6. Canada, 7. Colombia, 8. Costa Rica.

 

Yonkaira Peña of Dominican Republic was named the Most Valuable Player while Argentina’s Lucia Fresco was the top scorer. Other players awarded were: Gabriela Braga (BRA), Best Spiker; Antonela Curatola (ARG), Best Setter; Cándida Arias (DOM), Best Blocker; Kelci French (CAN), Best Server; Brenda Castillo (DOM), Best Digger; Juliana Paes (BRA), Best Receiver; Jazmin Molli (ARG), Best Libero.
