El Salvador blanks Belize
PANAMA CITY, Panama, August 23, 2014 – El Salvador defeated
Belize in straight sets (25-17, 25-19, 25-23) in the second
match of the opening day at the II Central American Men’s
Championship at Jose “Beto” Remon Gymnasium of Panama City.
A more quick Salvadorian team overcame the taller but
inexperienced Belize who fought bravely in the third set before
losing the defensive focus.
Rodrigo Chávez, captain of El Salvador, led the offense of the
winners with 15 points, followed by Mauricio Rivas with 15. The
promising team of Belize had Raluni Bernardez as their best
scorer with 12 points.
Ricardo Rivera, coach of El Salvador said to be glad about the
victory, especially in straight sets. “Facing Belize in the
first match was not a surprise. They have a tall team and our
advantage was based on our experience to decide at the end.”
Chavez supported his coach saying “we are here to play as a real
team and won against the strength and size of our opponents with
our good defense.”
“We had to wait for two sets before adjusting. In the third set
we fought but couldn’t control the reception. I congratulate El
Salvador because they had a great game,” Belize’ Coach Leon
Leslie said.
“We are a very young team, but I think we played well, we only
need to get more confidence. I know we will improve in our next
game,” Belize’s Captain Ivan Lino said. |
