GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, October 30, 2021.- El
Salvador downed Honduras 3-1 (25-23, 25-19,
23-25, 25-17) in their XXI Men’s Central
American Cup debut on Saturday at Guatemala’s
City Dome.
El Salvador and Honduras engaged in a tough
first set with no clear dominant team. It was in
the second set that El Salvador managed to take
control leading by five points (15-10) that
Honduras never recovered. Honduras snatched the
third set with difficulties only to be defeated
by a stronger El Salvador by a comfortable lead.
El Salvador led in kills 56-40, as well in
blocks 13-8 and in aces 4-1; while Honduras
committed fewer errors, 24 against 35.
On Sunday, Honduras faces Costa Rica at 1:00pm
and El Salvador goes up against Belize at 4:00pm
Rodrigo Chávez, captain of El Salvador: “We’ve
been training a lot; our team is young, new and
our coach instructed us to have fun and focus,
not to lose sight of our only goal: to win. I
think that we lost a set because of the lack of
experience from our younger players, they
weren’t able to deal with the pressure and they
got anxious, they are small details we need to
fix”.
Luis Membreño, captain of Honduras: “After one
year and eight months without volleyball in
Honduras it was really hard to face such a great
opponent. El Salvador kept their serves steady
and we committed too many errors. The team had
difficulties adapting to such a big venue, we
have never played here, but we will continue to
battle for a medal”.
