El
Salvador unstoppable for second consecutive day
GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, August 8, 2016. - El Salvador earned
their second consecutive win while beating Nicaragua in straight
sets 25-23, 25-19, 26-24 on day three of the AFECAVOL Women’s
U23 Central American Championship held at Gimnasio 7 de
Diciembre Alfonso Gordillo.
El Salvador had another stunning performance stopping
Nicaragua’s spikers while digging every single attack,
sustaining a ten point margin in the first set. El Salvador
showed a spirited performance with high-energy, added to a
structured game plan. Nicaragua on the other hand, was
committing many unforced errors having difficulties to regroup.
Nicaragua’s huge 10-4 margin in blocking wasn´t enough to
balance their 41 unforced errors. In spikes there wasn’t a
significant difference, with El Salvador leading 29-26; also the
winners held 5-3 advantage in aces and committed 24 errors.
Roxana Avalos of El Salvador and Ericka Calero of Nicaragua led
their teams with 11 points apiece.
El Salvador (2-0) will rest on Tuesday, while Nicaragua (1-1)
plays against Belize (0-2).
“I can resume today’s win in one Word “attitude”, each one of us
did their job and we fought in a positive way. Nicaragua
improved as the match developed and their serves were tougher in
the third set” expressed Laura Villalobos.
Coach Dany Calderon was satisfied with their strategy “we played
the same as yesterday but trying to commit fewer errors. In the
third set we had too many of them. Nicaragua took us by surprise
in the first set when they changed their setter to spiker and
that’s why we weren’t able to keep our advantage”. Dany also
added “my twelve warriors are here to fight”.
Ericka Calero captain of Nicaragua said that they lost because
their attitude was bad “we lost focus from the start and our
moral was down, in contrary from El Salvador, they were always
cheering and benefited from our mistakes”.
“We had many mistakes, El Salvador grew in the first set and we
got in trouble more and more. After this loss, we have to work
on the emotional factor; errors are the cause of defeats and
today our receiving wasn’t effective and this didn’t allow us to
attack as we know” said coach Claudia Noguera of Nicaragua.
