Feliz carries Dominican Republic scoring 32 points to beat Chile in five sets

CALI, Colombia, November 28, 2021.- Outside hitter Juan Feliz scored a tournament-high of 32 points to carry Dominican Republic to recover from a deficit of two sets to beat Chile 3-2 (22-25, 26-28, 25-22, 25-21, 15-12) at the men’s volleyball tournament of the I Junior Pan American Games Cali-Valle.

After five grueling sets, Dominican Republic resumed pool B in third place with 1-2 record and will play for the fifth position; Chile with 0-3 will play for seventh place.

Chile felt Dominican Republic’s pressure closing the second set while missing three set points; however they tried to persevere in the fifth set as Dominicans failed two match points before their win.

Dominican Republic recovered from a deficit of two sets with a 68-62 advantage in attacks and committing fewer errors, 32 against 37. Chile did better in blocking 10-8 and in serves 4-0.

Alongside Feliz, outside hitter Bryan Turbides scored 14 points, middle blocker Dawilin Mendez added 13 points and opposite hitter Rafael Almonte finished with 11 points contributing in Dominican Republic’s victory.

Outside hitter Vicente Ibarra led Chile with 31 points, outside hitter Rafael Fuentes and opposite hitter Yordan Araya tallied 13 and 10 points respectively.

Luke Harrison Ramírez, setter of Dominican Republic: “It was a team effort, our team cohesion as a whole made the difference; we kept together and did our thing. I really think my middle blocker stepped up and I really enjoyed setting him. Our energy as a team was great and we hope to do the same tomorrow”.

Jorge Orrego, setter of Chile: “We weakened our attacks from the third set forward, that cost us several points and then the game. The Dominican team attacked really well, avoiding our blocks, they did a great effort. I think we must keep our head in all the elements of the game, attacking, defense and blocking”.
