First victory for Puerto Rico at CACG

CORDOBA, México, Noviembre 16, 2014 - Puerto Rico claimed their first victory at the XXII Central American and Caribbean Games after beating Trinidad and Tobago 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-19).

Stephanie Enright finished 12 points while Sarai Alvarez closed with 10 for Puerto Rico. On the Trinidadian side, Channon Thompson was the best scorer, with 11 points.

The serve was key for the Puerto Rican team that finished with a 6-1 balance in their favor. Enright aced three times and Aurea Cruz in a couple of times, while the Trinidadians had a light advantage of 9-8 in blocking.

“We recovered from the defeat on first day, but I am not glad yet at all, because we did not played at the level we use to. We lost the connection between setting and attacking. There are things to improve,”said José Mieles, coach of Puerto Rico.

“I feel we played much better in comparison with the first match, but we made mistakes,” said Nicholson Drakes, coach of Trinidad and Tobago.

“Congratulations to Puerto Rico for this result. I thing we played better than yesterday with more productivity and more intensity, but we look forward to improve in our next match,” said Kelly Ann Billingy.

“We are happy for the victory, however we need to go improving our level and improve in some aspects. In comparison with the first match, we worked in service and blocking”, Yarimar Rosa, captain of Puerto Rico, remarked.
