LIMA, Peru, June 15, 2015 – The young squad of Brazil recorded
its first victory at the XIV Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup
by defeating South American counterparts Uruguay in straight
sets 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-14) in a Pool B contest at Eduardo
Dibos Coliseum of Lima on Monday.
After losing its first two matches in five sets, Brazil
dominated the match against its South American neighbors by
leading in attacks 31-21, blocks 10-2 and service winners 5-3.
Priscila Santos, who started the last two sets, was the leading
scorer for Brazil with 10 points, including three blocks and one
ace. Marcella Antunes, Lana Conceicao and Gabriela Candido each
contributed 6 points in the victory. Uruguay’s Gabriela Talmon
and Sofia Neves finished with 8 points apiece in the loss.
Lana Conceicao, captain of Brazil, gave credit to the strong
services of Uruguay and at the same time said this first victory
is very important since there is a long way to go in the
tournament.
Mauricio Thomas, coach of Brazil, admitted his team was out of
focus at the start of the match and had to react against the
Uruguayan serves. “I felt the team was tired and I had to use
the reserve players and that was a positive.”
Sofía Neves, the top scorer for Uruguay, said her team only has
two players from the senior ranks and the rest is working for
the future and support the national team at the South American
in Colombia. “For a while we were able to play at the same level
with them and despite Brazil is the superior team we had good
moments and that’s good for us.”
“We have a lack in the passing and it was there where they took
advantage, but for some moments we played even. Today I am
satisfied since we played without fear, didn’t fail that much in
the services and tried to play quick. For moments we showed the
Uruguayan game and that is battling in defense. Now we have to
keep working hard,” said Yamandu Peralta, the Uruguayan coach. |
