Five sets to decide Barbados bronze medal

 

PARAMARIBO, Suriname, July 2, 2018 Team Barbados did not win a set in the preliminary round decided to change their statistics by winning the first and third sets 25-23 and 25-19 while Bahamas took the second and fourth 21-25 and 24-26 to force the deciding fifth set in the 17th CAZOVA (Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association) Women’s Championship here tonight at the Ismay van Wilgen Sport Hall, in Suriname.

 

Although there was a fighting effort from the most senior player of team Bahamas, Melinda Bastian with 16 points it was not enough to stop Barbados winning the game.  Barbados’s Shonte Seale led her team with 22 points, 18 of which came from attack as Barbados won the fifth set 16-14 and the bronze medal.  

 

Barbados Coach Shon Hurdle was ecstatic as a result of this Bronze medal win after not winning a set in the preliminary games. “It was fantastic, It was fantastic” he repeated before being able to comment.  “Today the team played the level of volleyball I expected. It is a very young team and I am proud of their performance,” he ended.

 

Ashley Jordan, Captain of Team Barbados was very pleased with her team performance. She stated, “Our goal was to improve as the tournament progressed and that we did.  We put up a good fight and was consistent through-out the game and we achieved the desired results.”

 

Bahamas team captain Brittany Bonamy indicated that we lacked mental focus and has underestimated Team Barbados based on yesterday’s performance.  However, they stuck to their game plan and executed well.”

 

Covance Mortimer said “our team was unable to play up to the standard as anticipated and we fought ourselves out of the desired result.”
