Grenada outlasts St. Maarten in four sets
ST. JOHNS, Antigua, August 16, 2018 - Grenada made their coach
very happy with a closely fought 3-1 victory over St. Maarten in
the opening encounter of the ECVA Senior female competition.
The game lived up to the early predictions of tight competitions
as the score (25 -22, 29-31, 25 -23 and 25-14) apart from the
final game was very close.
Reneisha Stafford of Grenada led all scorers with 17 points and
proved to be the big difference between the two teams with 11
spikes 3 blocks and 3 aces from her position as middle blocker.
She was supported by Shakira Collymore with 10 points from the
opposite hitter position.
Opposite AKilah Muelens had 10 points in a losing cause while
none of her teammates reach double figures.
Coach Braithwaite was humble in victory and had praises for the
St. Maarten team the way they fought. “First let me congratulate
the St. Maarten team as they played a very good defense compared
to my girls. We had opportunities for much more kills but we did
not execute. However at this level a win is a win hence I am
satisfied putting the victory under our belts”, he said.
Assistant Coach of St. Maarten, Ivance Richards pointed to the
fact that the loss forces them into a must win position going
forward. “Our girls started out very nervous and by the time
they settled we made this a tough battle but like I said earlier
the one who makes the most errors losses and unfortunately we
were the ones to make more errors” he admitted.
In fact the error column was also very close as Team Grenada
earned 55 points from errors but gave up 54.
Grenada will meet St. Lucia on the 17th of August in
their second encounter while St. Maarten clashes with Bermuda. |
