Grenada topples St. Lucia and claim finals spot

ST JOHN’S, Antigua/Barbuda, May 14, 2016 – Grenada got the better of St. Lucia  when both teams met in the second round of matches in the ECVA Youth Boys Competition. After losing the first set Grenada came back to win in four sets, 21-25, 25-17, 30-28 and 25 -16.

The score belies the closeness of the games as there was little difference between the two in the run of play. Grenada however, took advantage of some St. Lucia lapses at most critical times in the game.

The victory brought a lukewarm reception from the coach Raphel Braithwaite. “I am satisfied with the victory but still not yet happy with the performance overall. For example one of my main hitters has still not yet clicked. I have tried everything but it is still not yet working out for him. Added to that we still did not execute the way they were supposed to. St. Lucia gave us a lot of free balls and due to a more rounded attack we were able to capitalize and that made the difference in the game” he reported.

Coach of the losing team Bernard President was shell shocked. “I don’t know what happened to my guys as this game was there for the taking. I still think that we are the better team but we did not show the fight that we exhibited in the first game. Somehow they played like the game was to be given to them. I am still at a loss for words in terms of what really happened here,” he complained.

Twin brothers setter Jamie Noel (13) and middle blocker Javin Noel (7) combined to give 20 points while Marvin John dished up 11 points to lead the Grenadian attack.

On the other hand the St. Lucian attack which was centered around Levi Leonce showed that his 14 points was the most among the losing team.

On the team score board Grenada trailed in blocks as they were edged 4-3 by St. Lucia but Grenada had 30 kills to St. Lucia 25 and collected 13 points from the service aces to St. Lucia’s 6.

The result meant that Grenada will play in the finals having won both of their games so far. St. Lucia meanwhile may have to come to grips with playing for bronze based on the results of the curtain game Antigua/Barbuda versus St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
