Guatemala and Costa Rica improve to 4-0
SAN JOSE, Costa Rica, March 6, 2013 - Guatemalans Andy Leonardo
and Luis García top the men’s division while Costa Ricans Ingrid
Morales and Natalia Alfaro lead the women’s field after two days
of the beach volleyball tournament of the X Central American
Games.
Leonardo/García defeated Belize’s Gustavo Morataya and Abimael
Godoy 2-0 (21-16, 21-17) and closed with a 2-0 (21-10, 21-18)
win over Nicaragua’s Gerald Umaña and Henry Hernández to improve
their win-loss record to 4-0.
On the other hand, Morales/Alfaro also improved to a 4-0 mark
following their two victories on Tuesday. They first defeated
Guatemala’s Ingrid Lopez and Lourdes Ramirez 2-0 (21-17, 21-11)
and then brushed aside Nicaragua’s Elia Torrez and Swan Mendoza
2-0 (21-14, 21-9).
Two exciting matches –one per gender- went to the three-set
limit with Nicaraguans Umaña/Hernández prevailing in three sets
over Costa Ricans Alexander Villegas and Gilberto Villegas
21-18, 13-21, 19-17) in the men’s while El Salvador’s Diana
Romero and Maria Vargas edged Guatemalans López/Ramírez 21-23,
23-21, 15-11 in 60 minutes.
It was not a good day for the local Villegas brothers who began
the day with a 2-0 record and concluded with a 2-2 mark
following their 2-0 (21-19, 25-23) loss to Salvadorans David
Vargas and Carlos Escobar.
