Guatemala beat Panama for ticket to Cali

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, July 14, 2021 – Guatemala became the last semifinalist at the U23 Men’s Volleyball Pan American Cup after scoring a convincing 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-22) victory over Panama in a duel between Central American teams for the last ticket to Cali Junior Pan Am Games.

The Guatemalans relied on a well distributed game from setter Daniel Ralon, who also contributed with a solid service game that included three aces.

Jose Carrillo scored 14 points as one of four players of Guatemala with double figures in the scoring sheets. Jose Perez added 13 and Francisco Gamboa and Jason Hernandez contributed 11 and 10 points in the victory. Panamanian David NG finished with 13 points.

Jason Hernandez, captain of Guatemala: “It was a close contest and our attitude was the key for the win. Tomorrow we will try our best to keep moving forward.”

Alejandro Camarena, player of Panama: “We knew it was going to be a tough match and Guatemala was coming to give their very best as we also did. There was only a winner at the end and that was the one who did the things better”.

Raider Lucas, coach of Guatemala: “We expected a tough match but the guys focused, did their best, and we got the objective of getting the pass to the Cali Games.”

Javier González, coach of Panama: “Congratulations to the team of Guatemala. After making an error you have to do a lot to recover. We need to behave as gentlemen and accept that the other team played better than yours.”
