MANAGUA, Nicaragua, October 17, 2021 - Guatemala
blanked Honduras 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-16) in
the first match of both teams in the XXI Central
American Senior Women's Volleyball Cup.
After a fairly even first set, in which Honduras
pressed to reach 13 points per side, Guatemala
managed to take advantage to win 25-22 and from
there always maintained an advantage at the
beginning of each set, even reaching 10 points
over the Honduran.
Rut Gómez and Martha Guillermo combined very
well with the captain and setter María Álvarez,
scoring 13 points each. For Honduras, Dazly
Durán scored 9 points and 8 Cecille Johnson.
Guatemala dominated in attack 33-23 and in
blocking 8-2, remaining 7-6 in service, with 22
error for Guatemala and 27 conceded for El
Salvador.
María José Alvarez, Guatemala´s captain: “We
come from a rather long and was a tired trip, in
the first set we got a little out of control,
but we are a team that knows how to recover and
we come with all the energy for the tournament
and for me it is special because it is my first
time as captain and I am happy that we won 3-0
”.
"It motivates us because tougher teams are
coming and starting with a victory, with this
team that is quite new, is a joy and pride."
William Fernández, Guatemala´s coach: “It is a
difficult competition, after more than a year
without competing and even training, everyone is
coming for the possibility of winning a
championship. The team looked good from the
second set, they improved a lot in reception,
they followed the instructions and we have a
team with depth in the changes and that helps us
a lot ”.
“The team is in a very good mood, they are all
focused on the goal, which is to be among the
best in the Championship.
Dazly Durán, Honduras' best scorer: “These games
are the most difficult, I think we did not
expect the fast game that Guatemala has and the
lack of rhythm affected us a bit, but it is
better to lose at the beginning than at the end,
the team is working better and tomorrow will be
better than today ”.
“We had two years without competing, we were not
prepared for the change of losing an advantage
in a set and then we could not recover”.
Marvin Ulloa, Hondura´s coach: “It is difficult
to start a tournament when we have only been
training for less than a month, the lack of
rhythm affected us. For the time that we have
trained, the team started well but the rhythm is
lost due to the lack of play”.
"We have a good serve, but at times they feel
afraid, they are not sure at the time of service
and that takes away our effectiveness."
