Guatemala defeated Belize in straight sets 25-14, 25-10, 25-10
to reach the XI Girls’ U-18 AFECAVOL Central American podium at
the National Gymnasium La Sabana in Costa Rica.
Guatemala started off slow and took advantage of 27 unforced
errors of Belize. Guatemala finished with 4-2 record and Belize
with 2-4. Guatemala waits for the match between Costa Rica and
Honduras for their final placing.
Belize was outdueled by Guatemala in blocking 8-5, in spikes
26-10 and with huge advantage in service points 14-2. Guatemala
had less errors (27- 17).
Middle Blocker Daniela Tornoe led Guatemala with 13 points,
joined by Laura Quiñones with 11. Outside hitter Kori Dieto
topped Belize with six points.
“I believe our team did well, but we do need to practice harder
for future tournaments. My teammates and me gained experience,
we saw Guatemala’s position against stronger teams y we are
aiming for more” said Guatemala’s captain Carmen Gomez.
Juel Lewis captain of Belize said “we were hoping for more but
Guatemala did better, my team had great experience learning and
growing as a team”.
“I think this category has a lot of ups and downs, all the
teams here had ups and downs. My team is skillful but it needs
to be more confident” said coach Edgar Callejas of Guatemala.
Albert Humes coach of Belize indicated “this was a good and
great experience for my girls, they prepared for four months
but they need to work more on passing, receiving and service”.
