MANAGUA, Nicaragua, December 7, 2015 – Guatemala opened with a
3-0 (25-19, 27-25, 25-21) victory over Honduras in Day One of
the XVI U20 Women’s Central American Championship at
Polideportivo España of Managua.
The Guatemalans prevailed in a complicated match, especially in
the second set after trailing 24-23. Captain Maria Renne Garcia
led the winners with 24 points while Kimberly Cardona added 12.
For Honduras, Cecille Johnson and Nataly Perez had 14 and 10,
respectively.
The winners led in attacks 40-26 and in aces 7-4 but the
Hondurans were better at blocking 11-8. Guatemala scored via 22
unforced Honduras’ errors while committing 24.
Guatemala’s captain Garcia said: “We played with enthusiasm and
joy to overcome the pressure of the first match. We came
prepared to come from behind and we always battle until the end,
never giving up.”
William Fernandez, coach of Guatemala: “The first match is
always difficult. Even though we didn’t play up to our usual
level, we got the five points, but there are some things to be
analyzed. The second set was the key, the girls didn’t give up.”
Ruth Aguilar, captain of Honduras: “It was a good game. We tried
our best on the court but had some problems with complex one,
but could solve very well the complex two. We need to improve a
lot.”
Marcos Tejeda, coach of Honduras: “I think Guatemala played
their game and we played ours. We didn’t execute several tactics
and it obviously affected the result. We made many faults and
they were indecisive in the key moments. If you don’t make the
points the other is going to make them.” |
