GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, October 18, 2015.- Guatemala
outdueled El Salvador 3-0 (25-14,25-15, 25-17) in their second
victory at the AFECAVOL Men’s U-19 Central American Championship
at Teodoro Palacios Flores Gymnasium.
The host Guatemala has a 2-0 record and eight points; and meets
Belize (0-3) on Monday in their third appearance of the
tournament. El Salvador (0-3) will face Costa Rica (2-0).
With a solid performance and effective while attacking,
Guatemala beat El Salvador. The home team had difficulties in
the third set with consecutive unforced errors as El Salvador
held a three point advantage. With the crowds’ support,
Guatemala recovered to seal in three sets.
Guatemala held a huge advantage in spikes 38-14 and a 6-3 margin
in blocking; in serves both scored two points and in errors they
were similar, Guatemala (27) and El Salvador (29).
Ouside hitter Jonatan Paz led Guatemala’s scorers with 11
points, joined by setter Edgar Maldonado and opposite Sergy
Rodriguez with 8 points apiece, Andy Rodriguez added 7 points.
For El Salvador, outside hitter Diego Ascencio scored 7 points,
Walter Orellana and Alejandro Reyes contributed with 5 and 4
points respectively.
Guatemala’s captain Andy Hernández said “there are no easy
opponent here, they did their job, but we deserved to win, it
was a team effort and we are glad for our second victory; en
each practice we prepare for our next opponent. We want to thank
the crowd for their support”.
Diego Ascencio “el Chino” captain of El Salvador said “we played
with good energy; this is the positive note of today’s
performance. We are satisfied with the job we did, we gave our
best effort and this performance motivates us for the next
match”.
Coach Alvinzi Pelaez of Guatemala said “El Salvador served well,
the improved from their previous performances; they are young
and have future. About my team, our attacking did well; we did
what was expected over the net. There wasn’t many blocking and
El Salvador hurt us in the middle, this is something to work on
because other opponents may hurt us. I am happy because the
players didn’t get tired and this is important for what comes
ahead”.
“Guatemala and Costa Rica are the strongest teams. I am happy,
my team has young players who are developing, while performing
they make childish errors. They showed that they know how to
