MANAGUA, Nicaragua, December 11, 2015 – Guatemala recovered from
losing the first set to defeat Nicaragua 3-1 (23-25, 25-21,
25-13, 25-10) for their fourth victory at the XVI Women’s U20
Central American Championship.
Maria Renee García scored 19 points to lead Guatemala, more than
double than teammate Daniela Tornoe, who was next with 8. For
Nicaragua, Captain Andrea Pereira finished with 18 points and
Ditzy Ortiz added 8.
Once again the errors affected both sides with Guatemala
committing 31 compared to 45 by Nicaragua. The Guatemalans
dominated in attacks 34-26, blocks 7-3 and aces 12-9.
María Renee Garcia, Captain of Guatemala: “We are elated. Losing
a set doesn’t mean losing the tournament. Every match is a
final. We won the match and losing the first set didn’t affect
us at all. We were motivated to show that we came here to win.”
Andrea Pereira, Captain of Nicaragua: “Many predicted a 3-0
loss, but Nicaragua battled hard to stop the undefeated
Guatemala. We were not able to do it, but at least we won one
set. We gave our best and we showed that we can surprise Costa
Rica in tomorrow’s match.” |
