Guatemala triumphed over Honduras in three sets

 

   

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador, August 30, 2015.- Guatemala triumphed over Honduras 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-18) at the Men’s U-21 XVI Central American Championship in Adolfo Pineda on Sunday.

 

Guatemala obtained their second win to stand with a 2-0 record and 9 points; Honduras drops to 1-2 record and remains with 5 points.

 

Guatemala managed to win spaces with powerful spikes and serves, while Honduras had important points thru blocking; Guatemala finished the first set 25-22. The actions in the second set were completely controlled by Guatemala, with 8-0 advantage at the first technical time-out; Guatemala doubled Honduras in points but still they missed four set points before ending 25-14 over Honduras who never reacted. For the third set, Honduras seemed to have woken up, forcing Guatemala to work harder. Guatemala held a five point advantage 14-9 that Honduras never overcame; Guatemala took the set 25-18.

 

Guatemala prevailed over Honduras in every skill, spikes (39-20), blocks (8-5) and aces (6-2); they score don 22 errors from Honduras and committed 18.

 

Outside Hitter Carlos Lopez of Guatemala led the score board with 20 points, 14 on spikes, 2 on blocks and 4 on aces; joining the winning effort was Opposite Erik Flores with 13 points and Outside Hitter Wagner Chacon with 10. Top scorer for Honduras was Abner Funez with 8 points.

 

According to Erik Flores captain of Guatemala, the win comes because of the union in his team “I believe this is our strength. Today the team is complete and we managed to neutralize their strongest players”.

 

Cuban Reider Lucas coach of Guatemala said “we set a strategy having in mind that Honduras was coming inspired after two great performances and our goal was to fight and win. The victory was in fact for us and it’s much better to have done it 3-0”.

 

Alejandro Avila captain of Honduras said “after playing ten sets in two days, the team is tired; we lost concentration. Guatemala is a powerful team but we fought strong”.

 

Marvin Ulloa coach of Honduras indicated “I agree, the team is tired and our Opposite player was on the bench due to an ankle injury at yesterday’s last points. The team couldn’t focus against Guatemala who has height in blocking and great defense, the ball never fell. Yesterday and today we faced two teams who came from a rest day and tomorrow we’ll face Nicaragua who rested today”.
