SAN JOSE, Costa Rica, August 19, 2015.-
Guatemala won a tough battle to El Salvador 3-1 (25-5, 21-25,
25-14, 25-19) at the Girls’ U-18 Central American Championship.
After Guatemala’s easy win in the first, actions evened out when
El Salvador took control to extend the game.
The stats of showed an even battle, Guatemala scored 34 points
in kills and six in blocking while El Salvador scored 29 in
kills and four in blocks.
Guatemala scored 43 points thru El Salvador’s errors, while
committing 25.
Kimberly Cardona of Guatemala led all scorers with 15 points, 10
in kills and 5 in blocks; joined by Laura Quiñonez with 10
points, Maria Fernanda Juarez and Mariana Umaña with 9 points
each. Gabriela Funes led El Salvador with 13 points
Guatemala’s captain Carmen Gomez said “we were expecting a
difficult match, the win could open us the doors to the title
and at the beginning we managed it well, then our nerves took
the best of us in the second set”.
Gabriela Funes, captain of El Salvador: “we lacked better
attitude, we wanted to give our best, but our nerves and
thinking we weren’t able to win affected us especially in the
first set”.
Coach Edgar Callejas of Guatemala said “for me this was El
Salvador’s best performance; we had a strategy based on their
errors, the first set was very good for us. In the second set we
failed more than 15 serves”.
Eric Hernández coach of El Salvador explained that the first set
is one to forget about “we had many inconsistencies, no control,
we were amazed, but in the second set two players had different
roles y we were able to put Guatemala off balance. In the third
set our ghosts came back, they had effective defense and control
while we began to speculate”. |
