VARADERO, Cuba, May 7, 2022 – Guatemalans
Natalia Girón and Paola Quiñones offered a big
surprise by advancing today to the women's
semifinals of the Varadero Beach Volleyball
Tournament by beating the local duo of Amanda
Kindelán and Dayi Zerqueira 2-0 (21-16, 21-13).
Giron/Quiñones will face Canadians Emma Glagau
and Ruby Sorra on Sunday, who defeated Puerto
Ricans Nieves and Stephanie Rondón 2-0 (21-19,
21-17).
The other semifinal will have the Cuban duo of
Leila Martinez and Lidy Echeverría facing the
Americans Iya Lindhal and Alexandra Wheeler.
Leila/Lidy defeated the Mexicans Atenas
Gutiérrez and María Quintero 2-0 (21-16, 25-23)
while Lindhal/Wheeler beat the Mexicans Abril
Flores and Esperanza Albarran 2-0 (21-14,
21-15).
Early on Saturday, Mexico's Gutierrez/Quintero
and Flores/Albarran advanced to the
quarterfinals.
Gutierrez/Quintero defeated Dominicans Julibeth
Payano and Jeneiry Rosario 2-0 (21-13, 21-14)
and Flores/Albarran defeated Canadians Anna
Licht and Anna Feore 2-0 (21-16, 21-14).
The duos of Girón/Quiñones of Guatemala, and
Nieves/Rondón of Puerto Rico, also moved to the
eight finalists.
The Guatemalans defeated Amber Bennett and
Cristina Almeida, of US Virgin Islands, 2-0
(21-13, 21-16) and the Puerto Ricans defeated
Yvonne Soler and Laura Molina of El Salvador,
2-0 (21-13, 21-11).
In the 9-12 round, Payano/Rosario edged Licht/Feore
2-1 (12-21-16, 15-13) while Soler/Molina beat
Bennett/Almeida 2-0 (21-13, 21-13). |
