Hector Cardona, president of CACSO, passes away in Puerto Rico
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, June 16, 2017 – The NORCECA
Volleyball Confederation is deeply saddened by the death of
Puerto Rican Hector Cardona, president of the Central American
and Caribbean Sport Organization (CACSO) on Friday.
Cardona, 81, finally succumbed to a battle with cancer after
being hospitalized several times in the past few months.
“We have lost a loyal friend and an outstanding sport leader and
human being,” said NORCECA president Cristobal Marte Hoffiz,
currently in Peru on the occasion of the Volleyball Pan American
Cup. “Mr. Cardona always conducted CACSO with equity and respect
for the Olympic principles.”
“He will be remembered as an authentic sport man who worked
tireless for the progress of all disciplines in our region and
will be sorely missed,” he added.
As president of CACSO since 2000, Cardona played a key role in
the organization process of the Central American and Caribbean
Games held in San Salvador 2002, Cartagena 2006, Mayaguez 2010
and Veracruz 2014.
He presided over the Puerto Rican Olympic Committee from 1991 to
2008 following a career as sport manager that started as
president of the Puerto Rican Boxing Federation in 1970. |
