Honduras earns first win at AFECAVOL U21
SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador, September 30, 2019.-
Honduras earned their first win at the AFECAVOL U21 Men’s
Central American Championship defeating Belize 3-1 (21-25,
25-16, 25-22, 25-22) on day one of the event at FESAVOL
Gymnasium of San Salvador.
Honduras recovered from losing the first set, but still had
to work hard to stop Belizean powerful attacker Ernest
Broaster who scored a match-high of 28 points.
Belize led in kills 46-35 but allowed 45 points on errors,
while Honduras committed a total of 26 and led 9-5 in blocks
and held a slim 8-7 margin in aces.
Three players topped Honduras, opposite player Alejandro
Lobo (13pts), and outside hitterr Allan Escoto (11pts) and
Kevin Herrera (10pts).
On Tuesday, Honduras (1-0) will face host El Salvador and
Belize (0-1) goes against Guatemala (0-1).
Allan Escoto, Captain of Honduras: “We found their weakness,
receiving, so we served harder to finish winning. They had
many errors. We will continue to fight each point”.
Ryan Arnold, Captain of Belize: “Our problem today was
defense and service. We started off strong in the first set
and build up our momentum, but we lost track”.
Osiel Vásquez, Head coach of Honduras: “The first match is
always difficult; my boys were really nervous in the first
set. We had planned to serve to the libero, which worked in
the second set much better, this way we frustrated Belize’s
reception and that made it easier for us to defend”.
Albert Humes, Head coach of Belize: “The team played well as
expected. I think there are a few errors that allowed the
opponent to build confidence for the next three sets”.
