Honduras finishes 4th place beating Nicaragua

 

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, August 12, 2016.- Honduras finished fourth place at the third edition of the AFECAVOL Women’s U23 Central American Championship beating Nicaragua 3-2 (25-13, 25-16, 17-25, 25-27, 15-9) at Gimnasio 7 de Diciembre Alfonso Gordillo.

 

Honduras finishes with 3-3 win-loss record and 14 points, to conclude in fourth place of the even. Nicaragua ends sixth with 1-5 record and 9 points.

 

A very slow match in the beginning, Honduras was missing energy but still won sets one and two strong. Nicaragua showed a considerable improvement in blocking putting a better rhythm, with spirited attitude and with desire to win, taking the match to a tie-break.

 

Honduras controlled the attacking 49-35 and serves 10-4, while Nicaragua was strong in blocking 13-9. They were similar in errors; Honduras committed 38 and Nicaragua 39.

 

Once again, opposite Cecille Johnson led Honduras with 23 points, joined by middle blocker Nathaly Perez with 14 points and outside hitter Lourdes Morales with 10 points. Nicaragua’s Dalia Conto, topped with 19 points, and followed by opposite Ericka Calero with 15 points.

 

 “We need to work more, we are ending the tournament really tired and with bruises, we need to work to have better resistance. Today we did a big effort, I’m glad we won” said Cecille Johnson Honduras’ top scorer.

 

Coach Marcos Tejeda of Honduras said “I think my team doesn’t like to win. We must keep an eye on Belize, they have improved a lot; and El Salvador gave an example of resilience and they went to fight for their medal, congratulations to them”.
