CORDOBA, Mexico, October 9, 2015 - Honduras finished in fifth
place at the NORCECA Men's Continental Championship after a five
setter win against Costa Rica by scores of 25-23, 20-25, 23-25,
25-21 and 15 -6.
The team coached by Cuban Marcos Tejeda had three players with
double digits as Frank Alley scored 25 points, while Jorge
Rivera closed with 16 and captain Luis Salgado with 14.
Meanwhile, Costa Rica, had four with more than ten units.
Richard Smith Hall recorded 25 points, while Julio Alberto
Alvarez closed with 14. Alberto Blanco and Captain Javier
Alvarez recorded 10 apiece.
"We played a classic Central American match in Cordoba.
Congratulations to Honduras for the result. It was a very
intense match and Honduras took advantage of their blocking
game. We did not have the ability to overcome it and made some
reception mistakes," said Costa Rican coach, Cesar Salas.
"As Professor Salas said, this was a classic match of the
Central American zone. We could define it in our favor. I think
the guys showed some anxiety at the beginning of the game. For
us it was a good result, because as I said, we didn’t have a
previous international exposure. We faced a rival of respect. We
had the goal to get a good place here and this result opens the
door to us by raising the level of our players, "said Marcos
Tejeda, Honduras coach.
"I think we struggled from the start. We work with the scheme
set by our coach and could resolve the key points. In the end,
the team stayed together and we could play with greater
flexibility in reception and well as very organized in our
blocking game," said Luis Salgado, captain of Honduras.
"We went out to take our best weapons for this match. However,
we made some mistakes and that costed us a defeat," said the
captain of Costa Rica, Javier Alvarez. |
